There is an old saying that likens grapevines to poets, and that is: the more they struggle and experience stress, the more interesting and noteworthy are the results they produce. It is this belief that gave way to our newest wine, “Poets Corner,” which is the name given to our micro-block of Clone 15 Cabernet Sauvignon which is planted on just 0.86 acres (1335 vines) in the northeast corner of our property. The sandy/gravelly loam soils in this section of our vineyard are derived from rhyolitic tuff (volcanic origin) which shows poor fertility and yet great drainage, causing these vines to struggle and put more energy into searching for nutrients and water residing deep in the soil, resulting in low-yielding, small, intense and flavorful berries — that just like the best poets, reveal themselves in an intense and imaginative way.


The 2022 Poets Corner opens with an opulent bouquet of spiced plum and cassis, layered with seductive notes of dark chocolate and licorice. Rich and commanding on the palate, it unfolds with a velvety mouthfeel and beautifully polished tannins that lend both depth and precision. Luxurious waves of fig and ripe red berries are accented by black and pink peppercorn, creating a seamless interplay of richness and vibrancy. As the wine evolves in the glass, refined nuances of sage, lavender and cool menthol emerge, adding aromatic lift and sophistication. The finish is long, decadent and impeccably composed, lingering with shaved dark chocolate and a graceful whisper of tobacco leaf.
